ZDSD Fact Sheet
Thank you for you continued interest in the ZDSD rat. We have compiled the following information to assist you in your evaluation and subsequent adoption of this model in your research endeavors.
The ZDSD Rat has been under development at PreClinOmics, Inc since 2001. During this time we have developed a strong understanding of the models performance under many different experimental conditions. The ZDSD is now fully inbred at 23+ generations using Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) analysis as confirmation.
- The ZDSD Rat is bred and housed in an AAALAC Accredited barrier facility
- ZDSD rats are maintained on irradiated 5008 (LabDiet, 1-800-227-8941)
- Prior to 16 wks of age, <5% of the rats become spontaneously diabetic
- Diabetic synchronization can be achieved by feeding a diabetogenic diet
- Animals are placed on the diet for a period of two weeks starting at 16 wks of age
- D12468 (Research Diets, 732-247-2390)
- 5SCA (TestDiet, 765-966-1885)
- 85% of the males become and remain overtly diabetic following this two week period
- Animals are placed on the diet for a period of two weeks starting at 16 wks of age
- Free access to drinking water is important as the animals develop the diabetic state
- Animals should be housed 1-2/cage with close monitoring of urine output as this may impact the frequency of cage changing
- Fasting more frequently than two weeks apart can affect their diabetic condition
